Elegant, beaded patterns adorn the warriors of the Rendille in Northern Kenya. As they get ready for their transition into adulthood, they grow their hair out by braiding it and painting it with ochre. However, sometimes warriors need a more practical hair arrangement: their braids are rolled into a net to keep their hair firm and free of dust, and feathers complete the hairstyle. These elaborate designs are worn with a sense of honor and pride and symbolize membership in the elite group of young men.
